Tacopaj (Taco pie)

You won’t instantly think of Sweden when you talk about Tacos, which is a very popular dish in Sweden on Fridays and Saturdays. Sweden has a big tradition of hearty pies and combining these two dishes into one makes the taco pie one of Sweden’s greatest culinary achievements. It is very popular in Sweden and that’s why I’m going to show you have to make this awesome pie.

Dough

150g (2/3 cup) butter
200g (1 2/3 cup) flour
2 Tbsp water

Set your oven to 225C (425F) and mix butter (preferably at room temperature) and flour to a crumbly dough. Add water and keep on stiring until you’ve got a nice dough. Now press the dough onto the edges and bottom of a form so that it forms a shell which will hold our filling later. Make tiny holes in the dough with a fork and put it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Then put it in the oven and let it bake for 10 minutes. Make sure though that it doesn’t turn too dark and crisp. It should not turn into a biscuit.

Filling

500g (~1 pound) ground beef
1 onion
3 Tbsp tomato paste

Spice mix

One bag of taco spice mix or
1 Tsp salt
1 Tsp garlic powder
1 Tsp cumin (very important for the taco taste)
1 Tsp paprika powder
1/2 Tsp cayenne pepper

Topping

Tomatoes
200g (7oz) Crème Fraîche
Grated cheese

Put the ground beef and the chopped onion into a frying pan and fry until the onion and beef is done. Put the tomato paste in there and spread evenly. Let it heat and then add 200ml (7/8 cup) water and the spice mix. Stir and let it cook until most of the water is gone. Slice or cut the tomatoes like you want it and put it on top of the “sauce” which should now be in your baked pie shell. Spread crème fraîche on the top and add the cheese. Let it bake for about 20 minutes.

I wish you a smaklig måltid and a lot of fun making this pie
