Past tense (group 4)

This group contains all the irregular verbs. They are also called strong verbs, because they (except from kommer > kom and sova > sov) change their vowel found in the stem. This unfortunately means that you need to learn to conjugate each verb individually. There are some rules though on how the vowels are commonly transformed. Here are the most common so called apophonies.

i > e u > ö y > ö i > a
bita bet bjuda bjöd bryta bröt brinna brann
bli(va) blev duga dög dyka dög dricka drack
lida led ljuga ljög flyga flög finnas fanns
niga neg njuta njöt flyta flöt hinna hann
rida red sjunga sjöng knyta knöt rinna rann
riva rev sjunka sjönk krypa kröp sitta satt
skina sken sluta slöt nysa nös slippa slapp
skriva skrev suga sög ryka rök springa sprang
tiga teg supa söp skryta skröt vinna vann

There are also (of course) verbs that don’t follow this rule. Here is a list of the most important ones:

present tense past tense
fick
ha hade
sova sov
veta visste
förstå förstod
komma kom
stå stod
vilja ville
ge gav
kunna kunde
sälja sålde
äta åt
gick
se såg
ta tog
göra gjorde
slå slog
vara var
