Pronunciation #32 - Retroflex consonants

Print lesson

In this episode we’re talking about the impossible, almost mute, sound retroflex. There are actually 5 sounds, that occur when R is combined with different letters. Some sounds are easier to make out then others.

RD [ɖ]

möda
effort

mörda
murder

RL [ɭ]

kal
bare, bleak, bald

Karl
Karl

RN [ɳ]

Mona [”mo:na] (name)
mor(g)nar [mo:ɳar] (pl. of morgon)

RT [ʈ]

snott [snʊt] (Supinum von sno)

lort
dirt

RS [ʂ]

tjuv
thief

ursäkta
excuse me

Basically, the R is mute and the consonant that follows is spoken slightly differently. It’s almost the same sound but with the tip of the tonge touching the upper teeth. Double R does not belong to the retroflex sounds and just shorten the vowel in front like a usual double consonant.
